Mr. Hughes, in addition to private clients, accepts Legal Aid and has been approved in the highest experience category by Legal Aid in the areas of family, civil and criminal litigation.

Mr. Hughes believes in a fair, reasonable and balanced approach to family law matters, whether they involve custody and access issues, child protection issues, support, property and other issues. Regarding criminal matters, Mr. Hughes believes in upholding the rights of the accused, the presumption of innocence and that every one is entitled to a full and fair defence.

Mr. Hughes has appeared regularly in numerous trials in the Ontario Court of Justice, in the provincial branches, the family law branches and civil branches; in the Ontario Divisional Court, the Ontario Court of Appeal in both family and criminal matters, in the Federal Court and in the Supreme Court of Canada in criminal matters. He has been counsel of record in several precedent setting cases. Further, Mr. Hughes was an assistant lecturer in civil procedure for the Bar Admission Course in Ottawa, a Moot Court champion and student editor of the Law Review at the University of Ottawa. Further, he is a member of the Carleton County Bar Association.

Mr. Hughes’s community involvement over the years included the Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, a director of the Board of a community newspaper, Newswest, a chairman of Our Lady of Fatima parish and a member of a finance committee.
